Nasa scientists find evidence of flowing water on Mars

Researchers say discovery of stains from summertime flows down cliffs and crater walls increases chance of finding life on red planet

Liquid water runs down canyons and crater walls over the summer months onMars, according to researchers who say the discovery raises the chances of being home to some form of life.

The trickles leave long, dark stains on the Martian terrain that can reach hundreds of metres downhill in the warmer months, before they dry up in the autumn as surface temperatures drop.

Images taken from the Mars orbit show cliffs, and the steep walls of valleys and craters, streaked with summertime flows that in the most active spots combine to form intricate fan-like patterns. 

Scientists are unsure where the water comes from, but it may rise up from underground ice or salty aquifers, or condense out of the thin Martian atmosphere. 

“There is liquid water today on the surface of Mars,” Michael Meyer, the lead scientist on Nasa’s Mars exploration programme, told the Guardian. “Because of this, we suspect that it is at least possible to have a habitable environment today.”

The water flows could point Nasa and other space agencies towards the most promising sites to find life on Mars, and to landing spots for future human missions where water can be collected from a natural supply. 

“Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past,” said Nasa’s Jim Green. “Liquid water has been found on Mars.”

But occasionally, Mars probes have found hints that the planet might still be wet. Nearly a decade ago, Nasa’s Mars Global Surveyor took pictures of what appeared to be water bursting through a gully wall and flowing around boulders and other rocky debris. In 2011, the high-resolution camera on Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured what looked like little streams flowing down crater walls from late spring to early autumn. Not wanting to assume too much, mission scientists named the flows “recurring slope lineae” or RSL.

Researchers have now turned to another instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to analyse the chemistry of the mysterious RSL flows.Lujendra Ojha, of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and his colleagues used a spectrometer on the MRO to look at infrared light reflected off steep rocky walls when the dark streaks had just begun to appear, and when they had grown to full length at the end of the Martian summer.

IndiGo to launch late night 'Red Eye' flights

NEW DELHI, SEPT 22:  

Delhi-based low-cost airline IndiGo is introducing the international Red Eye flights concept in the Indian skies.

In a communication to travel agents, IndiGo has said it will be launching very late night non-stop flights between Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chennai, and Delhi-Bengaluru from October 15.

Such late night flights are popularly called ‘Red Eye’ flights in the US because they operate late at night at fares that are much lower than what airlines normally charge.

As part of the plan, IndiGo plans to operate its 17{+t}{+h} non-stop flight between Mumbai and Delhi with a departure time of 2 am and arrival at 4.10 a.m. This flight will become operational from October 26 with fares starting at Rs. 3,055.

Chennai travellers can avail of the opportunity of the ninth direct flight to Delhi provided they are willing to travel on a flight leaving at 10.35 p.m. and getting into Delhi at 1.15 a.m. Flyers in Bengaluru wanting to travel to Delhi can leave at 10.15 p.m. and reach the Capital at 12.55 am in the morning.

IndiGo officials were not immediately available to talk on why the airline had taken the decision to launch such late night flights or whether the fares being offered on these flights were lower than those offered on its other flights connecting the same destinations.

Apple explores rules of the road for self-driving cars

SAN FRANCISCO: The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on Friday said that it met with Apple to discuss rules of the road regarding testing self-driving cars.

“The Apple meeting was to review DMV’s autonomous vehicle regulations,” a department spokesperson told AFP in an email response to an inquiry.

“DMV often meets with various companies regarding DMV operations.”

Apple has not commented on rumors that it is working on a self-driving car, and the California-based technology colossus did not respond to an AFP request to contribute to this story.

The DMV’s responsibilities include developing regulations for safe operation of self-driving vehicles. To that end, members of the department meet with companies to better understand the technology.

Google and several major car makers have been pursuing autonomous vehicle technology.

Google has been testing self-driving cars in Silicon Valley and elsewhere.

Toyota early this month announced plans to invest $50 million into building artificial intelligence into cars, an indication it could be joining the race to develop driverless vehicles.

The joint research with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will take place over the next five years, Toyota Motor Corporation said, emphasizing its interest in technology that could be used by people as they grow old or become less able to drive safely.

While the Japanese automobile giant did not mention making cars that drive themselves, it did promise work on “intelligent vehicle technology.”

A Stanford lab led by professor Fei-Fei Li will work with Toyota and MIT to use computer vision, machine learning and large-scale data analysis to enable vehicles to navigate complex traffic situations.

“Our team will work to help intelligent vehicles recognize objects in the road, predict behaviors of things and people, and make safe and smart driving decisions under diverse conditions,” Li said. –AFP
